Universities in Hong Kong

Universities in Hong Kong

There are 20 local degree-awarding higher education institutions in Hong Kong (HK). Eight of which are funded through the University Granted Committee (UGC):

The three leading universities in Hong Kong are
  • the University of Hong Kong (HKU),
  • the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (UST), and
  • the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).
The fourth and the fifth are
  • the City University of Hong Kong (CityU), and
  • the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong (PolyU).
Although the rankings of UST are better than CUHK, some people consider CUHK better than UST. The rankings of CityU are higher than PolyU but many people in HK consider PolyU better than CityU. Four universities appear in the top 100 QS university ranking (2019), while the top three appears in the top 50.

Founded in 1911, HKU is the oldest university in Hong Kong. It is strong in architecture, dentist, law, medicine, civil and structural engineering. Its dentist medicine is ranked number 1 in QS 2018.

Formally established in 1963, CUHK is the territory's second oldest university founded as a federation of three existing colleges – Chung Chi College, New Asia College and United College. CUHK, built on a hillside, is the largest university in Hong Kong. It is a collegiate university comprising nine colleges. It is strong in pure science. Its popular subjects are medicine and law. Its communication and media study is ranked number 20 in QS 2018.

Founded in 1991, UST is the territory's third institution being granted university status. It is strong in engineering and business management. Its partnership EMBA program is ranked No.1 in the world in the latest Financial Times (FT) Global EMBA Rankings 2018. This is the ninth time the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA program has topped the highly regarded international ranking chart. Its business and management is ranked 16, while its engineering and technology is ranked number 17 in QS 2018.

CityU was founded in 1984 as City Polytechnic of Hong Kong and became a fully accredited university in 1994. It is the only university in HK that provides veterinary medicine degree which is very new and started to have its first-year students in 2017. Its popular subject is law (LLB). Only HKU, CUHK and CityU provide both LLB and PCLL, but the law faculties of HKU and CUHK are considered better than CityU.

The history of PolyU can be traced back to 1937 as the Government Trade School. It became the Hong Kong Technical college in 1957, the Hong Kong Polytechnic of Hong Kong in 1972, and a fully accredited university in 1994. It's popular subjects are design, radiography, physiotherapy and phototherapy, and hotel management. Its hospitality and leisure management is ranked number 3 in QS 2018.

CUHK was the top choice among recruiters followed by PolyU and UST.

Director of AMAC Human Resources Consultants, Alexa Chow Yee-ping thinks employers are impressed by CUHK graduates because they do not mind starting out from the bottom and working overtime.

“Some HKU graduates gave employers the impression that they are not willing to start from the basics and thought they should be put on bigger more important roles,” she told Human Resources (ref 2).
